The GED will soon attempt to measure college readiness as well as being the learning equivalent of a high-school diploma, thanks to an upgrade the GED Testing Service hopes will make it a substitute for the ACCUPLACER, a popular placement test used by community colleges.
Students who successfully complete a new college-readiness portion of the GED will have demonstrated that they don't need remediation or the ACCUPLACER, according to the service.

As the graduates filed into the PS 218 auditorium in the Bronx on Wednesday night, donning bright blue caps and gowns, their friends and family clapped and cheered. Some clenched the strings of balloons emblazoned with “Congratulations Graduates.” Kids watched on, some distracted, some enthralled with the pomp and circumstance. Smiles graced many faces.

After being laid off from his textile job in 2009, Ricky Hall of Oak Level thought he had hit a dead end and “had nothing to look forward to,” he said.

Hall, who was in his early 50s, had dropped out of Bassett High School in the 10th grade in 1975 to help take care of his invalid sister. He had worked more than three decades in hourly jobs at local textile mills, including eight years at Fieldcrest Mills and about 25 years for HanesBrands Inc. and its predecessor companies, including Pannill Knitting.
